Tri suit and sitting naked in a hot steamy tent…

Yep that was me, not wearing a tri suit and sitting naked in a hot steamy tent.

With a few hundred other men of course!
I’d understand if you’re nodding your head and saying, “yep I knew it…ole Russ is coming out of the closet.”

It was the next stage of my ironman triathlon this past weekend.
It was also probably one event where I found out more about myself than at any other time over the past few years so I hope you’ll indulge me over the next few emails.

From the water I had to run (what seemed like a long way) to a tent where I could change into my bike gear.
For the seasoned triathletes they usually wear a ‘tri suit’ a less explicit version of a mankini.

Why didn’t YOU have a tri-suit Russ?
Well to honest I’m not a seasoned triathlete and didn’t need it.
I already had some cycling gear which I was ok with.

Cycling bibs, shirt, sunnys, helemet, gloves and shoes and one more thing…
CHAMIOS CREAM, and lots of it…you know where.
55 miles in a saddle you dont want friction!

I headed out for the bike.
Some of the bikes there were worth the same as a family car.
Mines pretty much middle of the road, just well looked after.

As the miles went on I was passed lots.
I also passed lots of people.
Everyone racing there own race, not necessarily each other.

With all the gear you need for a triathlon its easy to buy more kit.
Better kit.
Lighter kit.
Newer kit.
Hoping that it will make it feel easier or somehow make you go faster.

But the truth is, unless you’ve done the training just throwing money at something will never work.

Its the same with exercise, weight loss, getting in shape.
How many devices, programs, DVDs do people buy before you do the basics of putting one foot in front of the other.

This stuff is great but don’t be one of those with ‘all the gear but no idea.’
