I was training a friend the other day who’s doing well on the plan.
She’s trying hard and following to the letter of the law.
But she said, “My husband laughs at me when I said that sleep will make me lose weight.”
To be honest I don’t blame him, because it does sound a little crazy!
So I’ll explain the mechanics of how it happens.
It comes from your ‘Endocrine’ system.
Your hormone system.
Hormones are messengers. They tell the body different things.
Sleep deprivation can make the stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin climb.
They are secreted in a response to stress, you know..fight or flight response.
This could be a physical or a related psychological situation. (eg work)
After an adrenaline rush, cortisol stimulates appetite, while hormones that blunt it, drop.
Repeated exposure to this means that every time you eat in response to stress it becomes a mental and biochemical behaviour so eating food will make you feel less stressed.
Guess what are the biggest ways to get rid of Cortisol are?
Yep, you guessed it.
Thats why I always get my knickers in a twist when I talk about people using ipads in bed at night.
